Nazareth

"Nazareth is like a rose, having the same rounded form, enclosed by mountains, as the flower is by leaves."

Mat 4:15-16 [cf. Isa 9:1]

Nazareth / Nazaret
Thayer Definition:
Nazareth = “the guarded one”

Nazareth was a small and insignificant village during the period of Jesus. While the site was settled during the period 600-900 BCE, it was too small to be included in the list of settlements of the tribe of Zebulon (Joshua 19:10-16), which mentions twelve towns and six villages. Nazareth is not included among the 45 cities of the Galilee that were mentioned by Josephus, and her name is missing from the 63 towns in Galilee mentioned in the Talmud
Quaresimus learned that the ancient name was Medina Abiat, in which we may recognize the Arabic el-Medinat el-baidtah, "the white town." Built of the white stone supplied by the limestone rocks around, the description is quite accurate. There is a reference in Mishna (Menachoth viii.6) to the "white house of the hill" whence wine for the drink offering was brought. An elegy for the 9th of Abib speaks of a "course" of priests settled in Nazareth. This, however, is based upon an ancient midhrash now lost (Neubauer, Geogr. du Talmud, 82, 85, 190; Delitzsch, Ein Tag in Capernaum, 142). But all this leaves us still in a state of uncertainty.

  • The ancient settlement at Nazareth was probably left in ruins about 733 B.C. when Tiglath-Pileser II, the Assyrian conqueror, swept through Galilee. Taking most of the citizens of the Northern Kingdom into exile in Assyria, he replaced them with people from the countries he had conquered. Isaiah’s lament had come to pass, "In the past He humbled the land of Zebulon and the land of Naphtali," leaving the region to be called "Galilee of the Gentiles" (Isa 9:1). As the Maccabean era opened in 167 B.C., only a few isolated Jewish groups were living in Galilee. The Hasmonean conquest of the region by John Hyrcanus (134-104 B.C.), however, opened the way for a significant immigration of Jews from Babylon and Persia. Further, Hyrcanus and his successors forced Gentiles in the region to convert to Judaism or be expelled. By Jesus’ time, the Jewish population predominated in Galilee, as witnessed by the number of synagogues He encountered during His ministry throughout the territory.
  • It is likely that a whole clan of the line of David, from the exiled tribe of Judah, returned from Babylon about 100 B.C. and established the town of Nazareth. This may explain why Joseph and Mary, of the tribe of Judah, were to be found so far from Judea. In referring to His reception in Nazareth, Jesus described the citizens of the town as being "His own relatives and .. . His own household" (Mark 6:4). (Archaeologists have found no evidence of the site’s being inhabited during the Persian and early Hellenistic periods, from the eighth to the second centuries B.C.)

Situasi & Lokasi

Nazareth is in the area that was allotted to the Israelite tribe of Zebulun during the Old Testament period (see Tribal Lands), although it is not mentioned by name at all in that part of the Bible. It is located in Galilee, about 100 kilometers (65 miles) north of Jerusalem, nearly half-way between the Mediterranean Sea and the Sea Of Galilee. To the south is the Plain of Esdraelon, and across it, is Megiddo or Armageddon.
Situated about 20 miles east of the Mediterranean & 15 miles west of Lake Gennesareth, less than 5 miles west of Mt. Tabor, the highest point in southern Galilee. Built on the southeastern slope of a ridge at 1300 feet above sea level, with a commanding view of the broad valley of Jezre'el to the south

  • It is situated on the most southern of the ranges of lower Galilee, among the hills which are referred to as the south ridges of Lebanon, just before they sink down into the plain of Esdraelon (about 10 miles away). A rocky gorge descends southward to a plain between two craggy hills.
  • It was situated on the southeast slope of a hollow pear shaped basin, which descends gradually from the elevated plateau 1500 feet above sea level and opens out through a steep winding way (the stem of the pear) into the plain of Esdraelon, 1000 feet lower.
  • It is a secluded village lying in a basin, surrounded by the Nazareth limestone hills, which were said to "rise round it like the edge of a shell to guard it from intrusion."

Populasi

The 1st c. village, whose population was less than 500, was overshadowed by the fortified town of Japha just one mile south---described by Josephus as the "largest village in Galilee"

Scholars believe there were approximately 15,000 to 20,000 inhabitants during the time of Christ

Archaeological research suggests that at the time of Jesus, the population of Nazareth was about 120-150. Probably most of these people would have been related to the one clan, descendants of the group that had returned from Babylon one or two generations earlier.

Sosio ekonomi
Tombs & agricultural evidence (silos, cisterns, olive & wine presses) provide concrete evidence that the site was inhabited from the early days of Israelite occupation of the land (12th c. BCE). But the ancient settlement was never large, since it had only one spring.
Archaeological excavations have confirmed that the city was only a small agricultural village during the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
Since then, the site of Nazareth has been consistently inhabited. Most of the archeological finds consist of caves, cisterns and grain storage bins. The agricultural character of the site is made obvious with the discoveries of oil mills and mill stones. There were a large number of underground rooms because the soft chalk of Nazareth made it easy to hew caves.

In Judaism, Bar Mitzvah (Hebrew: בר מצוה, "one (m.) to whom the commandments apply"), Bat Mitzvah (בת מצוה, "one (f.) to whom the commandments apply," or Bas Mitzvah in Ashkenazi pronunciation), and B'nai Mitzvah (pl.), are the terms to describe the coming of age of a Jewish boy or girl. According to Jewish law, when Jewish children reach the age of majority (generally thirteen years for boys and twelve for girls) they become responsible for their actions, and "become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah."

In modern Jewish observance, the occasion of becoming a Bar Mitzvah or (in non-Orthodox congregations) a Bat Mitzvah is usually associated with the young man or woman being called to read the Torah and/or Haftarah portion at a Shabbat or other service, and may also involve them giving a d'var Torah including a discussion of that week's Torah portion.

  • Nazareth, tidaklah dikenal didalam PL

Toh, nabi Yesaya menubuatkan bahwa sebuah cabang, taruk,
nêtser : akan muncul dari Nazareth ini

  • Nazareth, tidaklah begitu dikenal didalam PB, terlebih ditelinga Yudea
Sehingga Nathanel pun bertanya

Joh 1:45-46

(19) Jawab Yesus: "Mengapa kaukatakan Aku baik?

G18
agathos
ag-ath-os'
A primary word; “good” (in any sense, often as noun): - benefit, good (-s, things), well.

It is needless to say that the people of Judea had never heard of Nazareth.
And from this we understand the reason that Pontius Pilate decorates the cross with the sign "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews" (John 19:19) - meaning that the "King of the Jews" is from "nowhere."

Luk 1:52 Ia menurunkan orang-orang yang berkuasa dari takhtanya dan meninggikan orang-orang yang rendah;

with warm regards
